Not your average fair, but F.A.R.E.- Food Allergy Awareness & Education is THE go-to for everything allergy.
The “Newly Diagnosed” section is so so helpful. You’ll want to download their
This is where I began to understand exactly what being food allergic meant. This helped me plan for the worst and hope for the best, but know that I know what to do in either scenario.
This guide has many of the things I’ll go over individually and reference later (see What’s Safe, What’s Not and Product Labeling) but for right now take a moment a briefly read through the packet. I can promise you’ll thank me later.
And yes! Complete the Emergency Care Plan from the packet!
The Emergency Care Plan is listed in the
Food Allergy Field Guide (pages 9-10).
It’s hopeful to think you’ll not have to ever use it, but chances are if you’ve found me here your little is allergic and even if the allergy isn’t as severe as my Brayden’s is any and all reactions can get scary. In the event the scary things happen it is almost comforting to see the care plan all written out. We keep ours in the kitchen medicine cabinet in a folder with our insurance information, his social security number, doctors phone numbers, and specific directions for the sitter in the event he has a reaction and reference needs to made. Also, having it in folder form is helpful if transport is needed to the hospital. Super easy to grab and give to doctors upon arrival.
Another really useful F.A.R.E. link, for us specifically, is the section completely dedicated to Milk Allergies
Everything from talk of the types of testing to gauge level of the allergen, to formula recommendations, and the ever-dreaded explanation of the difference between a lactose intolerance and dairy allergy. It’s all there. Simple, concise, easy to read.
Last but not certainly not least, one of my favorite areas of the F.A.R.E website is the
F.A.R.E. Most Popular Resources
In this area you’ll find evidence-based educational tools and resources. Customizable PDF’s, printable posters, and infographics; if you’re a visual learner like me, this is the place to go. Here’s a sample of one of their popular infographics:
